New Server

June 4th, 2011 No comments

I was looking for a new server for my home office for quite some time. I was looking for something small and silent with a decent network interface and enough disk space for the next couple of years. I found one: HP Microserver (Buy at Amazon.de).

Room for 4 hard drives (5 if you use the slot for the CD drive), max 8GB RAM (ECC) and an AMD Dual Core CPU with 1.3Ghz). Price is about 280 Euros (with one 250GB drive and 1GB of RAM).

The Hardware is quite nice, almost like real HP server hardware. I installed 8GB RAM and two 2 TB Disk installed (RAID 1 using linux software RAID) and it’s working fine so far. I just ordered the remote access card (Buy at Amazon.de) and migrated the data from my old “server” and my crappy WD NAS to the server.

Usenet

Yes I’m still using it but not as regularly as I used to do. I haven’t started my new client for some time and I just saw this:

45: de.comp.hardware.netzwerke.misc
37: comp.emacs
404: de.alt.sysadmin.recovery

RB250GS

June 1st, 2011 3 comments

Bought a new toy recently: A RB250GS. A 5-port manageable (web based) GBit Ethernet Switch for about 40$.

Works quite well.

A 8-port version and a CLI would be nice. And of course IPv6 for management. ;-)
